Our Montessori Legacy in Austin
At the heart of our school is a deep connection to the origins of the Montessori method. Our school founder, Ms. Amitha Goonetileka, was a pioneer of Montessori in the United States.
Today, the legacy continues with our head of school, Ms. Surangi, who is AMI-certified and trained by Joyce Goonesekera, a direct trainee of Dr. Montessori, and also mentored by Ms. Amitha.
We are one of the few schools in Austin offering a direct lineage to Dr. Maria Montessori’s original teachings.
A Tradition of Following the Child
Ms. Surangi, our Head of School, brings over 40 years of AMI-certified Montessori experience. As a dedicated Montessori educator, she works closely with our Montessori guides, helping maintain environments that are prepared and nurturing, where each child’s uniqueness can blossom to its fullest potential.
Her approach is rooted in traditional Montessori while also incorporating a modern approach for the 21st-century child. Through her philosophy, Pillars for Life, Ms. Surangi nurtures independence, emotional growth, and a strong sense of global citizenship within a loving and caring multicultural environment.
As a talented pianist and composer, Ms. Surangi intentionally shares her passion for music with the children through listening, movement, and self-expression. She also developed our Tour the World Projects, where children explore cultures, landscapes, and the beauty of the world through hands-on experiences. This work helps children feel connected—not only to their classroom but also to the wider world around them.
